What is Acudetox?
Acudetox is an acupuncture protocol that uses five sterile, disposable needles in the ear to treat withdrawal symptoms associated with the cessation of addictive substances. The original process was discovered in the 1973 at Lincoln Hospital in Bronx, NY. Lincoln Hospital had a methadone treatment program. Dr. Wen was researching the effects of electrical stimulation on the lung point in the ear for post surgical pain when he accidentally discovered that acupuncture relieved the symptoms of opiate withdrawal. The process has undergone some changes since then, but since then Lincoln has provided more than 500,000 treatments. Acudetox is used by 1500 clinics around the world and is used by about 1/3 of all drug courts in the USA.

FAQ about Acudetox

Does it hurt?

Most people report little discomfort throughout the process. Some people feel a sensation similar to a bee sting when the needles go in. Points that are sensitive one day may not be sensitive on another day. Breathing fully (relaxing) while needles are being inserted helps to reduce any sensations of pain.

What are the benefits of acudetox?

It isn't specific to your drug of choice, so if you use many substances, you will still benefit.

It is drug free, side effect free, non-habit forming, and relatively safe.

It treats the whole person by creating balance. This has a positive effect on the mind, body, and spirit. It alleviates anxiety, reduces anger and aggression, regulates mood and emotion, helps with letting go, and may help clients to sleep better.

It's non-verbal and requires nothing from you, so you can be successful right away!

The effects are immediate.

It helps to create change in people who are resistant to treatment.

How often should I do it?

The benefits of auricular acupuncture are cumulative, so the more you do it, the better results you will get. Most recommend daily applications. Some treatment centers offer it multiple times a day.

How long do the effects last?

Positive effects can be felt within 5 to 30 minutes. They generally last from 8 to 24 hours.

Is it good for all forms of addiction?

Acudetox has demonstrated positive results for all chemical addictions including, but not limited to alcohol, cocaine, methamphetamine, methadone, opiates, nicotine, and marijuana.

Are benefits limited to the withdrawal phase of addiction?

No. Acudetox is effective in pre-treatment (meaning use is still taking place), withdrawal, the active treatment phase, and as a relapse prevention tool.

Is acudetox only available for people who have substance abuse issues?

The protocol relives anxiety, balances emotions, and helps anyone to let go; however, the protocol is only approved for use in clients with substance abuse issues. Since acudetox is offered to everyone without a screening, we do not check for an addiction diagnosis.

How can I get started?

Acudetox is offered free of charge to anyone who walks in. You do not have to be a registered client of Dao. You do not have to speak to anyone to get services or tell your story. Donations are accepted to cover the cost of materials.
